Does this use more energy?
We live in an area where it is summer all year round. We have a central air conditioning system. We usually set the thermostat at 78 degrees when we are home. We shut it off at night while sleeping and use fans only.
When we leave the house, we shut the air conditioning off. During the peak summer months, it can get up to almost 90 degrees in the house. When we get home, we turn the a/c and just wait for it to cool down.
Are we using more energy this way or we actually helping ourselves out? In our opinion, it’s a good option for us. It doesn’t take very long to cool the house down once we turn it on. Our electric rates have sky-rocketed, and we’re trying to Conserve wherever we can. We know that the a/c probably uses up the most energy.
Thank you for your help!
You need to get a programmable thermostat. It will cost you a little up front but will save you lots of money in the long run. Program it to steadily increase the temperature while you are away without having it turn completely off. Then have it steadily start cooling before you get home. The surges of power necessary to cool off your home after being shut off is using a lot of energy.
